Software Engineer and Systems Architect

Hi, I’m Matt!

I’ve spent the majority of my career working with startups, giving me a very broad perspective on small business needs. I have been challenged countless times to find and deliver effective solutions to a wide range of technical needs in both product development and company administration. This work has been highly rewarding, and has significantly shaped me as a developer.

I have a keen interest in AI, automation, and DevOps, as well as a strong affinity for clean, robust, secure, and highly maintainable code. I am always excited to learn to use and adapt new technologies to novel and unique situations.

For the past 6 years I’ve been coordinating a global team in USA, Australia, India, and the UK.

Work

System Architect @ Forge Technologies • Brisbane, Queensland, AU

With Forge I took on the system architect and technical lead role in development for the Flame Detector product. I worked closely with key company stakeholders to fully understand and develop the system requirements in alignment with the business’ and customer’s needs, and lead a small team of developers to convert that system design into a well-polished product for residential consumers.

I also took on a sysadmin role for Forge’s internal operations, including devops and staff productivity, and its cloud services infrastructure.

Impact
  • Pioneered automated testing fixtures enabling over 100 000 cumulative test runtime hours, faster remote work, consistently reliable manufacturing, and safer software development
  • Reduced friction of communication in a remote-first context, resulting in raised productivity
  • Achieved rapid market feedback by slashing excessive complexity to produce a sleeker and more affordable product
  • Pioneered safe AI-driven development resulting in faster experimentation and prototyping
  • Built and maintained comprehensive developer tooling for test automation giving improved code stability and greater software optionality
  • Lead multiple 3rd-party security audits resulting in an A+ grade
Embedded Developer @ G2 Microsystems • Brisbane, Queensland, AU

I joined G2 by invitation of the owners shortly after Vardr was sold. With G2, I built a robust and fully-featured battery operated security camera and conducted significant R&D toward a next-gen product. In this role I worked closely with electronics engineers, the software teams, and key company stakeholders. In 2018, this company was sold to a major investor.

Impact
  • Produced 50% greater test coverage enabling faster and more reliable development
  • Piloted faster manufacturing by significantly improving fixture reliability
  • Pioneered greater user engagement with onboard video analytics
  • Delved deeply to isolate and fix bugs, including a shared-memory bug within the main framework
  • Designed, built, and supported firmware for the company's initial product
Embedded Developer @ Vardr • Brisbane, Queensland, AU

I joined Vardr at the end of University, shortly after the company was founded. I worked primarily on the embedded firmware in both R&D and product development contexts, and partly on related DevOps. Together we built a prototype security camera product and prepared it for the market, after which the company was sold to its primary investor. I then transferred to G2 Microsystems, which had the same owners. Vardr was delisted in 2023.

Impact
  • Produced rapid, actionable product design feedback from exploration
  • Embedded IoT
  • Video capture
  • Firmware design
  • Linux operating principles
  • Basic electronic diagram comprehension

Volunteer

Leading Field Operations Member @ State Emergency Service Queensland

My volunteer time with the SES has been very rewarding. I have spent countless hours through SES assisting my community in times of disaster, and in this time I have learnt the value of high quality leadership and teamwork. I have learnt to safely and dynamically assess risks, and how to develop and promote resilience in a team environment.

Impact

Risk assessment and management • Resilience • Team leadership • Training and event organisation • Storm and water damage repairs • Flood rescue • Swift water rescue • 4WD handling • Bushcraft

Duty Skipper @ Volunteer Marine Rescue Southport

I started with VMR Southport on a duty crew roster performing a 24-hour shift once every 3 weeks. During my time there I performed numerous rescues of members of the boating public who were in distress. I worked my way up through the internally-managed training system to achieve my nationally-recognised Commercial Coxswain certificate, and through the internal rank system to Offshore Skipper. In 2020 I took on the Duty Skipper role to lead and manage the duty crew shift.

During my time with VMR I learned many invaluable boating skills, in addition to making effective dynamic risk assessments, conflict resolution, and personnel management.

Impact

Risk assessment and management • People management • Conflict resolution • Resilience • Safe vessel operation • Commercial Coxswain
